The Arkansas State Symbols quiz June 13, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-06-12 at 6.39.31 AM
Follow the link below to try this fun quiz I built this week testing users’ knowledge of the many officially designated Arkansas state symbols, like bird, insect, fruit and nut. My favorite question is the one screenshot-ed above because it provided an opportunity to inject a pun and a seal into the proceedings.

A very South on Main weekend June 8, 2015

Katie and I had somehow never been to South on Main, the bar/restaurant that opened about a year-and-half ago in Little Rock’s hip, developing South Main arts district. Co-owned by Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson and head chef and a collaboration with the next-door Oxford American magazine, the place has quickly developed a reputation for deliciously authentic southern cooking and expertly-crafted cocktails.
So when a group of friends scheduled a Sunday brunch, we were pretty excited to finally give it a try. And then one of our favorite Little Rock musicians, the excellent Chris Denny, announced a show at South on Main the very night before, so we our long-awaited introduction to the space came a day earlier than expected.

The week that was: Pet VPs and an explosive proposal June 5, 2015

image
My job this week included shadowing a vice president of an insurance company who happens to be a dog and exploring the story behind a viral Little Rock-based engagement video that may be the first surprise proposal to ever incorporate a crashing enemy helicopter.
So, a good week.
The pet story was first. I spent a few hours Monday at the Little Rock offices of Affirmative Risk Management, where there are actually two K9 vice presidents and two feline ones. The result was this story, a fun look at a company that not only allows pets at the office, but promotes them to high-ranking positions (and secretly enjoys when telemarketers call for them).
Then Thursday I spoke by phone with the newly engaged couple and the talented filmmaker brother behind this great engagement video that’s blown up online. The brothers told the unsuspecting girlfriend they wanted her to star in a short, James Bond-style action film; it was really a ruse to pop the question after her boyfriend saved her from the crashing copter.
Here’s my story.
